Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Liquid-Liquid Extraction Equipment

Liquid-liquid extraction, also known as solvent extraction, is a process used to separate components in a liquid mixture based on their relative solubilities in two immiscible liquids. It is a widely used technique in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and biotechnology.

How Liquid-Liquid Extraction Works

In a typical liquid-liquid extraction process, the feed mixture is contacted with a solvent that is immiscible with the feed. The components of the feed mixture will partition between the two phases based on their relative solubilities. The desired component will preferentially dissolve in the solvent phase, while the other components will remain in the feed phase. The two phases are then separated, and the desired component can be recovered from the solvent phase.

Types of Liquid-Liquid Extraction Equipment

There are several types of liquid-liquid extraction equipment, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common types include:

  • Mixer-settlers: These are simple, low-cost devices that consist of a mixing tank and a settling tank. They are suitable for low-throughput processes.

  • Centrifugal extractors: These devices use centrifugal force to separate the two phases, which can increase the throughput and efficiency of the process.

  • Packed columns: These columns are filled with packing material, which provides a large surface area for mass transfer. They are suitable for high-throughput processes.

Applications of Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Liquid-liquid extraction is used in a wide variety of applications, including:

  • Pharmaceutical industry: Purification of antibiotics, vitamins, and other pharmaceuticals

  • Petrochemical industry: Separation of hydrocarbons

  • Biotechnology: Recovery of proteins and other biomolecules

  • Environmental engineering: Removal of pollutants from water
